I'm not sure how it started, but it started a couple of weeks ago, the boys have started saying "Thank you!" in a cheerful voice whenever we punish them.
"James, don't put your spoon in your milk, or I will take you cup away."
James puts his spoon in his milk.
I take his cup away.
James, "Thank you!"
(grrrrrrrrr)

Yes, they are. What I find even more worrying is their silent solidarity on this, as if they're conspiring together.
